How Was It MAde?
First, a series of sketches were drawn in order to quickly generate ideas. These design ideas are shown in the slide show here.
Because of the relative open-endedness and flexibility in design, I started making a few small boxes to see how I could design a base and a lid so that the lid could transform into a four-way divider. I started with an origami-style folded box, which conveniently folds to about 3"x3"x1.5" when using an 8.5"x8.5" square sheet of paper. I used these dimensions to draw a flat pattern for a divider and cut it using a knife. The image below shows how these two pieces fit together.
After using the hand-made model to find a flat pattern that works as both a lid and a divider, it along with the base was drawn using SolidWorks CAD software and printed on plain white paper. Both parts were cut using a knife and assembled as shown below.
After creating a second prototype from white paper, I decided to go ahead and laser cut the black poster board and create the final product. Shown below are the flat patterns drawn using SolidWorks and a piece of black poster board in the laser cutter after being cut.
The two images below show the process of creating the base of the box from a flat part, which was laser cut from black poster-board.
As mentioned earlier, the lid of this box is designed to be capable of two functions - (1) as a lid, and (2) as a divider. The series of images shown below demonstrates the process of constructing the lid from the flat part. The image at the bottom right shows the lid and base together.
The series of images below show the process of transforming the same flat part used to create the lid into a four-way divider. The bottom image shows the divider inside the box base.
