the finished product
Do you have a collection of sports memorabilia? If you do, the SmartStand baseball display stand may be the perfect solution for you. Constructed simply from injection molded silicone rubber, it provides a sturdy, elegant way of displaying autographed or collectible baseballs. This display stand is inspired by a desire to improve existing baseball holders, which are often expensive and enclose the ball in a hard plastic case which often distracts observers from clearly viewing the ball.
Product Features
- Simple, elegant, injection-molded silicone construction
- Capable of displaying not only baseballs but also other round sports memorabilia

how was it made?
Once the mold from Problem Set 7 had been 3D printed, I started by mixing the two parts of the silicone rubber. A 10:1 ratio of the white part to the blue part created about 75 grams of blue-green silicone, which can be seen in the image below and to the right.
Because mixing the silicone can introduce unwanted air bubbles, the silicone is degassed using a vacuum chamber. This removes the air bubbles and makes the silicone ready to pour.
The silicone was allowed to dry in the mold overnight, and then was removed from the mold. Notice that there are areas of the mold where silicone needs to be trimmed, especially around the location of the pouring hole. This excess material was removed using a small knife
