The Finished Product
The PS-1 paper coffee cup sleeve, constructed from a single 8.5”x11” sheet of blue 110-lb cardstock paper, surrounds the coffee cup, keeping drinks warm and protecting hands from hot liquids. Simple fastening tabs allow for quick, easy assembly while the rigid handle simulates the grip of a typical ceramic mug. How was it made?
First, a series of sketches were drawn in order to quickly generate ideas. These design ideas are shown in the slide show here.
A digital drawing of the 2D layout of the product was created using SolidWorks CAD software. This was done so that the final prototype could be laser-cut from a sheet of cardstock paper.
A total of four prototype iterations were performed in order to create the final product, which includes the process of using SolidWorks to create 2D drawings described above.
This 8.5"x11" sheet of 110-lb cardstock paper was inserted into the laser cutter and the final flat pattern was cut from it. Notice the cuts here are much cleaner than those achieved in earlier prototypes by the knife.
