The Finished Product
Do you have a collection of sports memorabilia? If you do, the SmartStand baseball display stand may be the perfect solution for you. Constructed simply from injection molded silicone rubber, it provides a sturdy, elegant way of displaying autographed or collectible baseballs. This display stand is inspired by a desire to improve existing baseball holders, which are often expensive and enclose the ball in a hard plastic case which often distracts observers from clearly viewing the ball.

How was it made?
First, a series of sketches were drawn in order to quickly generate ideas. These design ideas are shown in the slide show here.
After a few sketches, a design was chosen and the process began. First, I modeled a baseball as a sphere with a 3" diameter to use when designing the stand. Then I created a model of the desired shape of the stand, all using SolidWorks 3-D CAD software.
After the desired shape of the stand was created, the ball was used to optimize its final dimensions.
At this point, the stand design is finalized. So therefore I used this design to make the mold. The mold consists of two 3-D printed ABS plastic parts, which must align easily and allow the finished silicone product to be easily removed. I started by revolving one half of the cross section of the stand through the bottom half of the mold, and repeated that process for the top half.
